A Lion Rampant

We have posted already about the numerous horse harness pendants that are included in the assemblage, but this object is a little different. Rather than being a pendant, this one is a suspension mount. It would have been attached to a horse’s tack with rivets, which passed through the perforations at the corners. A pendant would have dangled below, attached via a bar that passed through the hinge-loops at the bottom.

The lion rampant that we see on this object symbolises bravery, and was a common motif in medieval heraldry.
