Buckle up!

We’ve been working on this fabulous D-shaped copper alloy buckle, which dates to the 11th/12th century AD. It features a lovely design in which the pin-bar is grasped at either end by biting dragon heads. It was in need of a little TLC: soil deposits and active corrosion were removed with swabs moistened with solvents. The metal was stabilised through immersion in a solution that inhibits further corrosion, and finally the object was given a protective layer of lacquer. It’s now display-ready!
