Looking Sharp

This beautiful item is a complete razor which dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC-800 BC). It is decorated on both sides with an incised geometric design, filled in with cross-hatching on one side. Leaf-shaped Early Bronze Age razors are commonly associated with Cordoned Urns, a type of ceramic vessel that feature applied decoration that divides the surface into sections.

The surface of the metal had some areas of active corrosion, and there were soil deposits left behind from when it was discovered. Our conservator carefully removed the corrosion and soil deposits using hand tools and swabs moistened with solvents. This revealed the finely detailed decoration in all its glory!

The metal was stabilised through immersion in a solution that inhibits further corrosion; and finally it was given a protective coating of lacquer. It is now looking sharp and ready for an audience!
