Alistair Galt BA MSc
Project Manager (Geophysics)
Alistair is an archaeological surveyor with broad experience in a variety of non-intrusive methods, with an emphasis on new technology. At University he specialised in geophysics and other non-invasive methods, which included undertaking traditional building recording surveys. One of these surveys was part of an award-winning conservation management plan of South Street Mill, Durham, in conjunction with the North East Civic Trust. Furthermore he completed a laser scanning project in the Sir George Staunton Country Park, Havant as part of a multi-disciplinary non-invasive analysis. He has also a number of photogrammetric models for historic buildings and monuments.
Alistair's commercial career began with the British School at Rome, working on the Rome's Mediterranean Ports project as an Assistant Surveyor on the Roman city of Utica in Tunisia. This was swiftly followed by employment with GSB SUMO, where he worked up from Assistant Archaeological Geophysicist to Cart Coordinator and Equipment Supervisor. In these roles he supervised projects, including magnetometer surveys (hand held and cart), processed data with in-house and commercial software and compiled reports. He has experience in presenting projects, such as the Longstone Landscapes Project at the Exmoor Archaeology Forum 2015. He joined AOC in October 2016 to complement AOC's increasing capabilities in research and commercial sectors, including cart surveys, as well as developing his own surveying skills. He has experience using CAD and GIS. He holds CIfA, CSCS, SSST, First Aid at Work, HS2 and Sentinel accreditation.
Alistair regularly presents in conferences around Europe, pioneering critical reflections on digital ontology in archaeology. He also participates in community archaeology within the geophysics department and as a leader of Leeds Young Archaeologists Club, a former Secretary of CIfA’s New Generation Special Interest Group and Digital Media Officer to CBA Yorkshire. His life outside archaeology includes fell running and playing the piano.
