After graduating in Art History in Spain, Juan moved to London to complete an MA in Classical Art and Archaeology. He published an article on Roman Mosaics adapted from an essay which formed part of his MA. During his studies, he volunteered at the British Museum as a guide and at the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre as a Collections Assistant, where he gained experience in applying object-care techniques and improving the collection’s storage and accessibility. He was also involved in explaining the meaning of archaeological artifacts to visitors in the Museum of London Docklands. He furthered his experience in post-excavation by volunteering as a Finds Assistant with MOLA, who offered him his first job as a Field Archaeologist in 2012. He then worked with a variety of employers including Cambridge Archaeological Unit, until joining AOC as a Site Assistant in 2013. After working in a different sector for several years, Juan has now rejoined AOC as a permanent member of staff.

Juan has worked on a number of rural and urban sites across England, including Hampton Court Palace, the Roman Ermine Street in Hertfordshire, Crossrail projects in London, a Victorian burial site in Brentford, Medieval field systems in Dartmoor and Eastern Western Rail projects in Oxfordshire. He has developed a range of skills which include carrying out watching briefs, assisting with trial trenching and geophysical surveying as well as GIS surveying with GPS Trimble. He has also enjoyed helping record the structural debris and remains of Historical Buildings, allowing him to learn conservation techniques.

With experience in both field work and post-excavation, Juan is excited to take on more responsibilities and continue learning at AOC. He is currently preparing to apply for the Associate grade of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.
