Kai graduated from the University of Highlands and Islands with a 1st Class honours degree in Archaeology in May 2017 after studying as a mature student. He received the UHI’s archaeology student of the year award in relation to research undertaken into the investigation of articulated bone groups found within Iron Age sites on Orkney, focusing on the Cairns Broch. Kai joined AOC after volunteering as a student with the team on the community project at the Vitrified hillfort site of Dun Deardail, and since joining AOC as a site assistant has successfully contributed within all aspects of fieldwork on projects such as the A9 Luncarty to Birnam, where he was the longest-serving member of the team, involved throughout evaluation, excavation and the post-excavation processing phase. Kai is now a Project Officer having gained extensive experience while in the field and having run a number of projects containing significant archaeology such as Brucefields, Cambusmore, Newcraighall in Scotland’s central belt, and Peterhouse in Cambridge. Another of Kai’s key projects undertaken at the 19th Century Leith Docks is now published within the Journal of Maritime Archaeology and also featured in History Scotland magazine. Kai has a keen interest in site survey and hopes to eventually focus within this aspect of archaeological fieldwork in preparation for the final depletion of his knees and back.
