Director

Martin is a Director of AOC, Head of Fieldwork and is responsible for all aspects of Health and Safety.In the years between graduation and this full time post he worked as self employed field archaeologist. Martin has been based in Edinburgh since graduating and was formally employed by AOC in April 2001. Martin has managed over 300 fieldwork projects for AOC, ranging from watching briefs to excavations. These projects have included 30 excavations ranging from prehistoric structures within the world famous Kilmartin Glen to the year-long excavation of modern industrial structures during remediation works at the Commonwealth Games site, Glasgow.

Martin has worked closely with Historic Environment Scotland on various infrastructure projects, and with the Human Remains Call Off Contract, in which he was responsible for the excavation of six cemetery sites, in Orkney, Barra Taransay and mainland Scotland. In addition, Martin has worked closely with the City of Edinburgh Council, as project manager for the excavation within the listed building Tron Kirk, and the ongoing community excavations at Cramond Roman Fort and Bath-house (2005-present).

Martin has carried out research excavations as co-director in Moray (Moray Enclosures Project) and Aberdeenshire (Cairn More) and has spoken widely on the results of his excavations and research.

Aside from AOC he has a keen interest in public archaeology and was the Secretary of the Midlothian Young Archaeologists Club, between 2005-9, is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and is a member of the Prehistoric Society and Glasgow Archaeological Society and a Member of the IFA.
