Operations Manager (Inverness)
Mary joined AOC in 2014 from Ross and Cromarty Archaeology Services (RoCAS), a consultancy she co-founded in 2010, and is currently Operations Manager in AOC's Inverness office. Mary completed her university studies at Boston University with dual degrees in Archaeology and French Language/Literature, whilst training in the US Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps. After 4 years of active duty service in the U.S. Navy, she returned to archaeology in Scotland.
Mary is an experienced field archaeologist/surveyor and consultant, having managed fieldwork, survey and post-excavation projects for hundreds of infrastructure, forestry, housing and renewable energy developments across the Highlands and Islands. Large fieldwork projects have included: excavation of a Mesolithic site at Berriedale Braes in Caithness; evaluation and excavation of multi-period prehistoric sites at Inverness West Link Road and Torvean Golf Course; excavation of a Bronze Age cemetery and Neolithic sites ahead of new development in Drumnadrochit; archaeological monitoring of the River Ness Flood Alleviation Scheme; excavations at Craig Phadrig Hillfort and Comar Wood dun; and excavation of a Bronze Age cemetery at Armadale, Isle of Skye. She has undertaken and managed extensive landscape surveys, to include Cambusmore Estate near Golspie, Kintradwell Estate near Brora and Glen Feshie and Glen Tromie near Kingussie. As part of the Townscape Heritage Inverness project with High Life Highland, Mary also oversaw the provision of a series of community workshops and engagement, followed by production of a mobile website centred on the built heritage of Academy Street, Inverness.
Mary has co-directed research excavations at the medieval burgh site of Cromarty as part of the Cromarty Medieval Burgh Community Archaeology Project and is a volunteer leader of the Rosemarkie Caves Project.
