Project Officer

After graduating with a Master's degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2010, Stuart worked as a freelance archaeologist for many of the major archaeology companies in Scotland, where he obtained a substantial amount of experience on a variety of sites before being taken on officially by AOC in 2014.

Stuart worked as a site assistant on a variety of excavations, including Collessie (Fife), Strathallan (Perthshire) and Greenan (Ayrshire). Promoted to Project Supervisor in 2016, Stuart successfully ran numerous evaluations, as well as small to moderate sized excavations such as Blackdog (Aberdeenshire), where a burial associated enclosure along with roundhouses and multiple pits were discovered. Stuart also led larger excavations such as Bertha Park, a multi phase prehistoric site and more recently Saughton Hall, a Victorian stately home built onto the original 16th Century house.

As of late 2017 Stuart was promoted to Project Officer and was integral in the running of both the evaluation and excavation of the A9 works for Luncarty to the Pass of Birnam. Stuart successfully led a small team, as part of a larger multi team effort, in the trenching of a number of land parcels affected by the A9 works. Upon completion, Stuart was responsible for the excavation of all areas where significant archaeology was discovered which included a wide variety of features and structures associated with both the Iron Age and Late Neolithic periods.

Stuart has assisted in a number of human remain call off contracts, providing experience in both recovery and interpretation, thanks to his MSc in Human Osteoarchaeology. Stuart has also worked on a number of community projects such as Dun Deardail Hillfort, Moredun Hillfort and Black Loch.
