Iron Works in Progress

We’ve shared lots of images of artefacts that are ready for display, but not so many of conservation in process.

This assortment of iron objects is undergoing a longer treatment to ensure a long life! They are currently being soaked in a solution of diluted alkaline sulfite that removes chlorides to ensure the long-term stability of iron archaeological artefacts. Some of the smaller or more fragile artefacts are in their own little dishes within the solution to help protect them and keep them separate.

At the moment, it looks like a pick ‘n’ mix of medieval buckles, arrowheads, spurs and all sorts! We’ll share more about some of the highlights later, once treatment is complete.
