Meet the Conservators
As work begins on preparing all of these fabulous objects for display, we’d like to introduce you to the conservators who will be responsible for caring for the artefacts while they are with us here at AOC.
Gretel Evans
Gretel is AOC’s Conservation Manager, leading the team on the conservation of a wide range of objects of all time periods and materials.
Gretel started her career as an archaeologist, but made the change to conservation and has been an Accredited Conservator-Restorer since 2005. She has worked on several significant conservation projects within the National Museums of Scotland including the creation of Museum of Scotland, and then the Scottish National War Museum. Later with Glasgow Museums, she was a lead member of the conservation team involved in the creation of the award-winning Riverside Museum. Gretel’s work has even taken her to Antarctica as part of the Ross Sea Heritage Restoration Project.
Gretel will be responsible for overall project management.
Simeon Tsvetkov
Before joining AOC, Simeon worked at a conservation centre in Denmark specialising in waterlogged organics. During his time there, he gained experience in treating and freeze-drying waterlogged wood, as well as stabilising various archaeological inorganic materials. He was also tasked with conserving a small collection of ostrich feather hats and scarfs from the 19th century.
Since joining AOC, Simeon has worked on a variety of archaeological and historic objects ranging from Roman coins and fibulas to modern rubber lifebuoy. He is currently involved with the long-term project of cleaning and stabilising a large collection of historic weaponry and armour.
