An Assortment of Axeheads

Among the items that our conservators are preparing for display in Perth’s new museum is a handful of Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC-800 BC) axeheads of various types.

They include a middle Bronze Age palstave, a type of axe made to fit a split wooden handle. The loop at the underside was used to help secure the palstave to the handle. There are also two early Bronze Age flat axes, one of which bears traces of decoration.

Our conservators removed corrosion and soil deposits using hand tools and swabs moistened with solvents. The metal was stabilised and then lacquered to ensure that these fabulous items remain in tip-top condition for many years to come.
